I really like your “grab shots” from around the house……you may find that “grab shots” rather than slowly composing a photo is where your strength is.

There is a historic phrase about capturing the moment before it is gone…..waiting around for a repeat or do over rarely works.

Here’s another philosophy that I carry “capture the random moments that inspire you”…..

Cheers

Thank you! I really appreciate it. I tend to be a quick photographer. The moment I see something, my camera is out within seconds. I think my brain works this way because I was a wedding photographer for so long. I had to train myself to anticipate a moment before it happened. I think I now carry that philosophy everywhere I go—looking for moments before they unfold

Holy shit, you do zip lining? This is the first thing I would try if I’m ever in a country where they’re doing it 😅

Great idea to write your thoughts down. I do it on paper.

Excited to read more. It’s inspiring and sometimes similarities can be discovered.

Such a lovely read! I agree we get caught up in the rapid pace of life and it's nice just to slow down and take note of every day life! Love the photos! And the kind pep talk at the end. Keep doing what you're doing Razlyn! Look forward to seeing the photos from your trip! 😄

I love this format!

Regarding thought #3: Conventionally, it may be frowned upon to change the publication name--but for no good reason. Don't let the name limit you or mislabel your content. I am not in love with the name of my own publication, and I am ready to change it as soon as I have a better idea for it.

Regarding thought #4: Interestingly, I find that many photographers, or artistic souls, are sensitive to or inspired by music. Myself included, though I don't really listen to it while photographing--I like to immerse myself in the sounds of the environment, especially if I am in the nature.

I appreciate your thoughts and encouragement, Mike! and you’re so right that many creatives have a unique connection to music. It’s beautiful to see!

Just think - palms swaying gently in the soft, warm breeze, the sound of waves lapping the shore as you sit back, drink-of-choice in hand and just go ‘aah…’😌

(Of course, your camera would always be close to hand, always ready for that next shot..😉😏)

I would say... As a lover of monochrome, take the Illford (but have a roll of tri-x up your sleeve. As for the cameras... My first thought would be the Rollei, but damn, that Leica looks really fun. Take both?

Yeah, I might have to bring both huh?!?!

I'm in love Kodak Vision 3 at the moment, it's a beautiful colour film and I realise that not many people have tried yet. Maybe give that a go.

Oh that’s awesome! I just looked and those are beautiful! I love the color rendering. What did you shoot it at?

Expand full comment
Liam Jones's avatar

Box speed but I was using a point and shoot. The exposure was a little dark on some of them so I brought that up in negative lab pro but other than that, I haven’t edited those. The colours are straight from film

Razlyn Lysaught's avatar

Wow that’s impressive!!! Hmmm. I’ll have to do some research to see if others suggest another speed, whether I take my Leica or Nikon, I have control over what I meter at. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Now I’m even more excited

Oh how much I love this post…let me count the ways….

Music is playing through my scrolling through the comments. I too love music. I always say that I'm a polygamist artist. I'm married to writing, the love of my life is music, and I ended up having an affair with cameras. I still can't let go of any of them!

The photos are like little secret elves jumping off the screen from yours to mine, trying to tell us who you are.

Marketing world. Been there. Done it. I keep finding things in common with you!

Excellent Friday vibe. P.S. in PR I move quickly so the Rolleiflex may not be able to express herself in the same way. I voted Nikon for the portability and the nifty fifty because I think that FL will be perfect! Can’t wait to see the shots!

Omggg! I love that we have so much in common, Juliette! When I first followed you, I knew there was a pull to your photography and you as a person.

I love the whole “polygamist artist” notion—that really resonates with me. My loves are photography, music, and painting. I have an entire painting studio but I haven’t painted in quite some time. Maybe one day if I find more time on my hands, I’ll get out the paint and brushes!

And you’re so right about the rolleiflex. As much as I love her, she’s for slower vacations. The F2 is a stellar choice though! I feel I can move quickly with the F2!

I’m so glad we met here!!! I really enjoy talking with you and enjoying all your beautiful photography!!! Your work is so inspiring

Thank you so much! It’s great to connect to and I can’t wait to see you dive into painting again. I know how hard it is to carry so many creative outlets but I believe in your polygamy 🤭

I wanted to vote in your film poll but the choices are too fast! Go with something like FP4+ or TMax 100 and Ektar!

FP4 is on the list! I wish there was an option to let people put whatever they wanted to. I didn’t see that.

Great read. Take an FP4 with you. Just to change it up. That's all I shoot. I love it. You will have lots of light on your trip, so a slower film will not hurt. You may even like it!

Have a great trip!

I don’t even know where to begin, this was so full of good stuff!!! The photos, even seeing them in other contexts earlier they were so good, but seeing them here mixed with others I don’t recall seeing, sequenced so nicely brought them to life in a new way. The mundane photos especially totally engaged my brain. You’re such a positive force around here, it’s infectious, always commenting and encouraging others. And lastly yes to all film stocks, variety is best IMO!!

Oh and if your name doesn’t vibe with you anymore, absolutely change it. That stuff is important to keep YOU engaged with what you’ve created. We change all the time, it only makes sense that our things change along with us. Change it once, change it twenty times, who even cares!

I’m so glad you’ve encouraged me today! It’s nice to hear from someone else that it’s ok to change names. Especially if it’s not vibing with me or my work.

Thank you so much for the compliments too—I’m glad you felt the pics were engaging. That’s what I wanted people to feel when I took them. To know that normal life can be dreamy too lol
